Is This The Secret To Getting Laser Focussed?

I hope this note greets you in a comfy corner of your home office, sipping on a cup of something warm and ready to take a virtual adventure with me!

This blog is your one-stop shop for all things related to reclaiming your focus and conquering productivity hurdles when working from home.

And I’m kicking off with my secret sauce of productivity!

It's been a part of my routine for so long now that I kind of thought it was common knowledge.

But just the other day, a friend of mine who I often talk to about productivity said he’d never heard of it!

It was like hearing someone say they'd never tried coffee!

To me, the ‘Pomodoro Technique’ is as essential as my morning brew ☕️

And as it seems (unbelievably!) like not everyone knows about this, I knew this is what I should kick of this newsletter with!

7 reasons you need the pomodoro technique when working remotely

The Pomodoro Technique (named after a tomato-shaped kitchen timer) is simple but incredibly powerful.

In a nutshell: you break your work into 25-minute chunks (or 'Pomodoros'), with a 5-minute break in between and a longer break after you’ve done 4.

So why does this work so well at home? Let's get into it!

1. Improves performance and well-being

Our attention spans are limited and when we try to power through a task for hours on end, our brain's concentration and performance can start to decline.

The Pomodoro Technique, with its short bursts of focused work followed by short breaks, aligns well with our natural concentration cycles.

But it’s not just about concentration. These frequent breaks are also great for our mental and physical well-being.

According to Scientific research, when you work intensely for hours on end, stress often builds up. But when you take short breaks, you give your body and mind a chance to relax and reset.

In the traditional office setting, breaks happen naturally - grabbing a coffee, chatting with a co-worker, even just walking to the bathroom.

But at home, without these natural interruptions, it's easy to get caught in a cycle of non-stop work. The structured breaks in the Pomodoro technique help to overcome this.

2. Creates rewards

Our brains are wired to respond to rewards, so when we know there's a break coming up, it's easier to stay focused and motivated.

It's like telling yourself, "Just another 10 minutes, and then I can stretch my legs or grab a quick snack." The reward of the break can keep you going.

3. Helps manage distractions and interruptions

Working from home can feel like being in a minefield of distractions.

But here's where the Pomodoro Technique really shines!

When you know you’ve only got to focus for a set period of time, it's much easier to ignore distractions.

You just tell yourself that you’ll deal with whatever just popped into your head when your Pomodoro is done!

Having a set time limit also helps if you get interrupted by your spouse or children.

It’s better for them (and you) to be able to give them a concrete answer like "I'll be free in 18 minutes" vs a very unclear “I need to finish this report”

4. Creates structure

When you're working from home, the lines between work and personal time can easily blur.

By setting specific times for work and rest, you ensure that work doesn't take over your whole day.

It helps to create clear boundaries between your work and breaks, making it easier to switch off at the end of the day.

5. Fights procrastination

There's something about knowing you only have to work for 25 minutes that makes even the most daunting tasks feel achievable.

You think to yourself, "I can do anything for 25 minutes," and before you know it, you're off and running.

It can also create a sense of urgency and give you that little nudge you need to dive into tasks you might usually put off.

6. Creates intentionality

One of the things I've learned over the years is that productivity isn't just about doing more; it's about doing what matters.

And that's where setting intentions comes into play. It's like having a roadmap for your day.

It helps you stay focused because you know exactly what needs to be worked on and for how long.

It also gives a sense of control over workload because you know from the start that you have enough time to tackle tasks without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

7. Measures progress

Finally, one of the biggest benefits I've found is the sense of accomplishment the Pomodoro Technique gives you.

When you're working from home, it's easy to feel like your work is never done. But ticking off those Pomodoros throughout the day gives you tangible proof of your progress.

It's a simple way to track your productivity and gives you that satisfying feeling of getting things done.

⚙️ how to use pomodoros ⚙️

It's as simple as making a cup of tea! Here's a simple breakdown:

  1. 1
Choose Your Battle(s): Pick the tasks you want to tackle - I usually write down my top 3 for the day.
  2. 2
Set Your Intention - Write down how many pomodoros you are going to do for each task
  3. 3
Set the Clock: 25 minutes on the timer – that's your pomodoro.
  4. 4
Crack On: Work until the timer rings. No distractions allowed!
  5. 5
Take Five: Enjoy a 5-minute break. Stretch, grab a snack, do a little dance.
  6. 6
Rinse and Repeat: Do this four times.
  7. 7
Holiday Time: After four pomodoros, reward yourself with a longer break. You've earned it!

the final tomato

The Pomodoro Technique can really help you buckle down, concentrate, and plough through your to-do list once you get the hang of it.

It's not just a time management tool though, it's a way to set intentions, stay focused on what matters, and reclaim control of your day.

It’s also flexible. Feel free to adjust the timer if 25 minutes feels too short or too long. It's all about finding what works for you.

Maybe it's the classic 25/5 minute split, or perhaps you find a 50/10 minute split more effective. Experiment and see what works best for you.

Once you get used to it you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

So grab a timer (or an app), and dive into that to-do list.

You might just find that your most productive days are right around the corner.

Keep me posted on your progress!
